The Cruachan Hydroelectric Dam was opened in 1965 and has been providing electricity for Scotland for more than 50 years. It was part of a pioneering scheme to produce hydro-electricity in strategic locations throughout the Highlands of Scotland. This visionary project laid the foundations for the development of renewable energy sources in Scotland. The focus on sustainability continues today with the establishment of wind farms and the development of tidal energy systems which will provide Scotland's renewable energy well into the future.
